Frequently Asked Questions

What is the PDM33 designed to mic?

Low-frequency sources: kick drum, bass cabinets and floor toms. Its response starts at 20Hz and the capsule is built for extreme sound pressure levels, which is exactly the environment inside a kick drum. A general vocal microphone in the same position would either distort or simply miss the bottom octave.

Does the PDM33 need phantom power?

No. It is a dynamic moving-coil microphone, so it generates its own signal and works on any mixer input with a standard balanced XLR cable, sold separately. Being dynamic also makes it tolerant of high volume and rough handling. Note that the PDM35 in the same family is a condenser and does need +48V.

How does it differ from the PDM34?

What each is tuned to capture. The PDM33 is for bass and kick, with a 20 to 16,000Hz response. The PDM34 is the snare and tom mic, with a 40 to 18,000Hz response that favours stick attack and detail. Both are cardioid dynamics with an integral stand mount, and a typical kit uses one PDM33 on the kick with PDM34s on the rest.
