The Blackmagic Design Video Assist 5 inch 3G is an on-camera monitor and recorder that solves two problems at once: it gives you a proper 1920 x 1080 touchscreen to judge focus and framing on, and it records broadcast codecs to an ordinary SD card so you are not stuck with your camera's internal compression.

Screen
5 inch capacitive touchscreen at 1920 x 1080, 300 nits. Bright enough for indoor and shaded work — for direct sunlight, the 2500 nit Video Assist 12G HDR models are the ones to consider.

Connections
1 x SDI input and 1 x SDI output on Micro BNC at 270Mb, 1.5G and 3G. 1 x HDMI input and 1 x HDMI output. 16 channels of embedded SDI audio in and out, 8 channels of embedded HDMI audio. 3.5mm headphone jack and a built-in mono speaker. Note this model has no analog audio inputs and no LANC port.

Recording
SD and HD to 1080p60, plus 2K DCI to 25p. 10-bit 4:2:2 YUV, REC 601 and REC 709. Codecs: ProRes 422 HQ, 422, LT and Proxy, and DNxHD 220x, 145 and 45 in both QuickTime and MXF. Recording to 1 x UHS-I SD card slot.

Monitoring tools
Waveform, RGB Parade, Vector and Histogram scopes, shown as picture-in-picture or as an overlay with adjustable opacity. Focus and exposure assist, 3D LUT support and a tally indicator.

Power
External 12V supply, and compatible with Sony NP-F "L-Series" style batteries. Batteries are not included.

Computer connection
1 x USB Type-C for webcam output, initial setup, software updates and the Video Assist Utility. Note that on the 3G models the USB-C port does not support recording to an external drive — that capability is exclusive to the 12G HDR models.
