Two metres is the desktop length. It reaches from a microphone on a boom arm, over the back of a desk, down to an interface sitting on the floor or on a shelf below — with enough give that swinging the arm towards you does not tug at the connector. Podcasters and streamers tend to settle here after trying one metre and finding it stops just short.

It also suits the second row of jobs where source and input are close but not touching. A keyboard's DI output to a mixer on a stand beside the player. A talkback microphone to a rack a step away. Close-mic drum work where the sub-snake or stage box has been placed right beside the kit, so the kick, snare and tom microphones only need to travel a metre or so of real distance plus a little routing around hardware.

That last case is worth dwelling on. Drum microphones live in a crowded space, and cable that is too long gets wrapped around stands, caught in a hi-hat clutch or pulled when the throne moves. Two metres gives you enough slack to dress the cable along a stand leg and tie it off, without a surplus loop hanging in the path of a stick.
