Five metres is what you need once the input is no longer beside the performer. A vocalist standing downstage, a mixer tucked into the wing, and suddenly three metres finishes a body-length short. This is the length that crosses that gap without asking you to join two cables together.

Houses of worship and community halls work through these constantly. A lectern microphone at the front of a room feeding a rack against the side wall. A pair of choir microphones on tall stands with their bases set well back from the input panel. A reader's microphone that has to reach a wall plate on the opposite side of a platform. In each case the height of the stand consumes a metre or more before the cable even begins travelling horizontally, which is why the jump from three to five happens so often.

It is also the natural length for feeding a snake that is close but not adjacent. Stage boxes get placed where they suit the multicore, not where they suit the microphones, so a bit of extra reach lets one box serve a cluster of positions instead of being repositioned for every input.

Balanced construction starts to earn its keep with every metre added. This cable runs a balanced pair of oxygen-free copper conductors under full spiral shielding, terminated in 3-pin XLR male and female connectors with metal housings, and jacketed in flexible black PVC that takes repeated coiling at pack-down.
