Fifteen metres belongs to bigger rooms and permanent jobs. School halls, sports pavilions, worship spaces, function centres — venues where the microphone position and the control position were decided by the architect, not by the audio operator, and the distance between them is simply a fact to be dealt with.

A great many of these cables never get coiled again after installation. They are run once through a conduit, over a ceiling grid or along a cable tray, terminated at a wall plate or a rack, and left there. That is a good use of a fixed length: cut nothing, join nothing, and have a single continuous conductor between the microphone and the preamp. For touring use it is the cable that stays at the bottom of the case until the room turns out to be larger than the last one.

Where balanced wiring starts to matter

Over fifteen metres a cable spends its whole length walking past things that radiate interference: mains cabling in the wall, dimmer racks, lighting bars, motors, fluorescent ballasts. A balanced line carries the audio on two conductors of opposite polarity, so interference that lands equally on both is subtracted at the input rather than amplified. That is why professional microphone connections are balanced, and why a run of this length is unremarkable on XLR while it would be a problem on an unbalanced lead.

The build is the same across the Swieler XLR range: oxygen-free copper conductors, full spiral shielding, 3-pin XLR male and female connectors in metal housings, and a flexible black PVC jacket.
