Swieler XLR Microphone Cable 20m

Twenty metres is a long throw. Outdoor events where the stage and the mix position are separated by a crowd barrier and a lawn. Back-of-house runs that leave a room, follow a corridor and terminate in a plant room or a comms rack. Large halls where a single continuous cable is preferable to two shorter ones and a coupler. Why balanced XLR earns its reputation here

Any cable behaves like an aerial. The longer the run, the more electromagnetic noise it picks up along the way — mains hum from a nearby power lead, buzz from dimmers or LED drivers, hash from motors and switching supplies. A balanced XLR line carries the same audio signal on two conductors with opposite polarity. Interference arriving from outside lands on both conductors more or less equally, and the balanced input at the far end responds only to the difference between them. The interference, being common to both, is subtracted; the audio, being a difference, survives. That subtraction is called common-mode rejection, and it is the reason a twenty-metre balanced microphone run can sit quietly beside a power cable while an unbalanced line of the same length would arrive humming.

Spiral shielding contributes the other half of the defence, draining higher-frequency interference to earth before it reaches the conductors at all. Neither mechanism is exotic — both are simply why the industry standardised on this connector for microphone level signals, where the source is measured in millivolts and there is no headroom to lose to noise.

Practical notes for a run this long: route it along an edge rather than through traffic, cross power cables at right angles instead of running parallel to them, and give it a proper over-under coil so the next deployment pays out without twists.
